TUTOR: Richard Rees PPS
DATE: Monday 16th September

SUBJECT: Colour and Composition

WEBSITE: https://www.artyrees.com

EMAIL: rees888@btinternet.com

Many painters accept what is in front of them as a subject without too much consideration of colour and composition.
This can work very well, but being aware of the possibilities of these two elements and how to manipulate them in your work is quite liberating. This workshop looks at these two elements using examplesof pastel paintings. There will be an explanation of colour and composition ideas and then you will have a chance to try out what you have learned with two colour exercises and two composition exercises.

Please bring a variety of references – preferably those you think are attractive in colour, composition or both.  There will be references provided.  Bring your usual pastel medium, some A3 or A4 paper, but also some watercolours to be able to extend your colour range if necessary.  However, there will be a lot of pastels and coloured paper available to use.

This workshop will explore making a tonal underpainting in preparation for a still life study in chalk pastel. We will work using watercolours ( or thin acrylic paint ) and ink on a pastel support which is able to take a wet layer. eg Colourfix by Art Spectrum / Pastelmat by Clairfontaine /mountboard or a pre stretched piece of Ingres or Murano type of paper.

Please bring some watercolour or acrylic paints ( dark shades - Alizarin + Indigo or similar ) + a dark ink you may already have. A few brushes - not best ones.

We will be thinking about composing a still life group ; items will be available to select but do bring a particular object you may wish to include. Bring your usual pastels + some paints and support as above. I will have some sheets of Colourfix to purchase’

TUTOR Katrina Wallis King PS
DATE: Tuesday 17 September

SUBJECT: Pastel Landscapes

WEBSITE: https://www.katrinawallisking.art/

EMAIL ADDRESS: katrinawallisking.art@gmail.com

This landscape workshop is an opportunity to explore the rewarding medium of pastel - considering composition, and the use of expressive mark-making and colour to create interest and a sense of place. Over the course of the day Katrina will share her techniques and approach, as well as giving students individual attention.

Participants are encouraged to bring in reference images (sketches and/or photographs) to explore and develop creatively during the workshop. Please bring your own dry medium materials - charcoals, pastels and suitable paper - although there will be some additional materials available on the day.
