THE ReMARK July 2026
The ReMark will appear every month to highlight the current activities. Whilst we are still looking at the best way to resume the Pastel Society Newsletter in a digital format, we hope this will help to focus the mind. Despite the success of the 2025 exhibition with new records for submissions, general sales and sealed bids as well as very good attendance figures, we have not been sitting on our laurels & from the formal feedback from the Mall Galleries, we are assessing what we can do even better next year.
Some long-standing members have decided to retire from specific Council roles but new members have stepped up and are already doing a wonderful job; putting together a question & answer guide to help new members; making positive inroads talking to outside galleries about exhibitions for both PS members & non-members work and continuing to increase numbers using our WhatsApp platform. We have also moved from X (Twitter) to BlueSky https://www.bluesky.com given the controversies surrounding the former.
With our current website designer Liam Culver moving onto pastures new, we have engaged a new website designer who is working with Liam on the changeover and will build on the site’s success to date. We thank Liam for his great work.
Our digital archive of exhibition catalogues & selected historical items is up and running and this is already proving useful. It is free for anyone to scroll through & all we ask is that the user acknowledge the Pastel Society when information is used. Anyone can also sign up for free as a PS Friend by simply giving us an email contact address & we can ensure that you will receive news earlier and we hope feel a part of the society.
Finally, our main priority over the coming months are The Heatherleys Pastel Society Workshops which run from the 9th to 11th September. All details are on our website and to book please contact rees888@btinternet.com
There are further ideas in the pipeline, some provided by Friends, and so watch this space and if you have any questions, just ask me at simonandhelenahodges@btinternet.com

Artist's Statement:
I love the directness and accessibility of pastels and they are fast becoming my main medium. Painting anything with a pulse - mainly people, but also animals, and birds - has been my passion from early childhood. As I now live in rural Norfolk, I have to get up early to catch the available outside humans, mostly in the form of fishermen. For me, it is looking at people in their surroundings, rather than beginning with the “scene” and afterwards judiciously putting in the odd person. I’m with Hockney when he says he just loves looking. For me, a good touch of bright plastic oillies, brightens what can often be grey, dull UK light, into something more Matisse like and dancey.
