I've been painting for over forty years, and for the last ten I've been a full time artist working each day in my garden studio. During this time I've been elected as a member of The Royal Society Of British Artists, (RBA) The Pastel Society (PS) and I’m now the immediate Past President of Manchester Academy of Fine Art (PPMAFA). I’m based in the northwest of England and I exhibit widely throughout the UK.
Throughout this time my work has progressively become more abstract in nature and over the last few years I've tried to do a small, quick, abstract study on paper each day which I often use as catalyst to start a new work. I never have a fixed image in mind at the outset, preferring to let the imagery evolve through the process of painting.
Reproducing a likeness is not something I concern myself with when painting, but in capturing the essential characteristics of a subject. My methodology is one of constant change until the tensions of the composition are right. Energy and a sense of freedom are what I strive for, allowing the spontaneity of the marks to be interesting in their own right.
I’ve never restricted myself to working in one particular medium and I continually find myself switching between acrylics, collage and both soft and oil pastels depending on what I'm trying to achieve. I continually redraw, rearrange and obliterate passages in a desire to achieve a balance of colour and form. The end result is what is important.
My work is in collections in England, Wales, Scotland, USA, Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand.
