The Studio - Schedule of Events

The Pastel Society are pleased to announce a number of talks, demonstrations and events, which will run during our 2023 Annual Exhibition in the Mall Galleries, London. 

Booking is not required for talks or demonstrations, however it is required for the "Life Drawing Evening - in the Gym".

 

Wednesday 24th May

 

11am - 4pm

Simon Hodges - ‘One artist’s sketchbooks’

Including the most recent sketchbooks and the chance to try out various types of pastel and ask any questions. 

 

Thursday 25th May

 

11am - 1pm

Simon Hodges - ‘Pastel without boundaries’

An illustrated discussion including a brief history of pastels and The Pastel Society, Degas, materials and ways of using them and protecting work and how to frame it. Simon will then lead a walk around the exhibition to highlight some of the points discussed.

2pm - 4pm

Richard Rees – ‘Pastels & mixed media’

Pastel and dry media can be combined with other media to achieve unique effects. Try out different media combinations that make the most of their qualities and create expressive opportunities.

 

Friday 26th May

 

11am - 1pm

Simon Hodges - ‘One artist’s sketchbooks’

Including the most recent sketchbooks and the chance to try out various types of pastel and ask any questions. 

2pm - 4pm

Simon Hodges - ‘The Five components of a painting’

An illustrated talk on how a good painting will result from five considered decisions and creativity may result in a great one. Will also include considerations when framing work, whether for exhibitions or the home.

 

Saturday 27th May

 

11am - 1pm

Simon Hodges - ‘One artist’s sketchbooks’

Including the most recent sketchbooks and the chance to try out various types of pastel and ask any questions. 

2pm - 4pm

John Tookey – Pastel demonstration

John has a fluid and attractive way of using pastel on a small scale and will demonstrate how he builds up a work and be happy to answer any questions you have about pastel painting.

 

Sunday 28th May

 

11am - 4pm

Children’ Workshop

An informal workshop for children of all ages to work with water-based pastels and produce a small pastel painting based on a theme to be announced. Take your own art away with you but allow us to photograph it so that it forms a pixel in the largest digital image that we can produce for a bigger audience after the exhibition.

Please note that parents/guardians are encouraged to participate so long as they do not interfere with their children’s work. All materials will be provided and further information will be supplied at the exhibition.

 

Monday 29th May

 

11am - 1pm

Simon Hodges - ‘Never too old for Thunderbirds’

A personal, illustrated talk about “99% perspiration and 1% inspiration”, childhood interests and inspirations, minor celebrity, listening to and taking advice, architecture, management, mid-life crisis, model-making, illustration, creating opportunities, exhibitions, galleries, The Mall Galleries, The Pastel Society, gardening and dealing with depression, being child-like and not childish and constantly believing that it is never too late to exploit your creativity.

Roger Dellar – Pastel demonstration

Roger will demonstrate his fast drawing and pastel painting skills to guide you how he creates his work and be pleased to answer any questions that you have about pastel painting.

6pm - 8:30pm

‘Life drawing evening – in the Gym’

Enjoy an evening of drawing and/or painting life models with pastel and dry media with Members of The Pastel Society and fellow pastelists.  Two models have been selected from a London Gym to provide a ‘strong’ basis for your creations.

 

Friday 2nd June

 

11am - 1pm

Join Simon for a couple of hours sketching around the gallery. Bring your own sketching equipment but be prepared to embrace a shared experience and different approaches. Some additional materials will be made available.
